The Popularity of Hoodia Gordonii
The term, “Hoodia Gordonii” or “Hoodia”, is quite recognized these days in the health and fitness products industry. It is known as a safe and natural appetite suppressant derived from a cactus-like plant, and thousands have been using it for a number of years.
Hoodia started to become popular in the early part of the year 2000 when two media outlets ran a story on it. An investigative television news magazine on CBS News, 60 Minutes, did a feature on Hoodia Gordonii by sending a correspondent to the Kalahari Desert to sample the plant herself. The British Broadcasting Company or BBC likewise made a documentary showing its own correspondent traveling to the desert and trying out Hoodia. Both reported that after eating the edible portion of the plant, they indeed lost the desire to eat or drink and did not feel hunger pangs during mealtimes.
These two shows contributed much to the popularity of Hoodia because after they were shown on television, the market was flooded with Hoodia Gordonii products sold as food supplements. These supplements were distributed in the form of pills, like Pure Hoodia Gordonii, powder, liquids and even skin patches, all guaranteeing to make the user eat less.
Today, Hoodia Gordonii products are still in demand and remain popular among the health and weight-conscious consumers. This is mainly due to the several benefits that they provide. First and foremost, the products are natural because their main ingredient comes from a plant, and therefore, are considered safe. The tribesmen that inhabit the Kalahari Desert have been known to use the Hoodia plant when going out on long hunting trips, so they would not feel hunger or thirst for a relatively long period. The fact that this has gone on for thousands of years have boosted the consumers’ belief in the safety of Hoodia-derived products, since there have not been any observed side effects on the tribesmen. Further, it is not a stimulant and does not cause the person using it to have erratic heartbeats or palpitations. To most dieters, this comes as a relief, since some of the more well-know diet pills contain stimulants and have been banned because of dangerous side effects. Instead, Hoodia works by fooling the brain in thinking that the body has eaten its fill even if the amount of food taken is very minimal.
Many have attested to the effectiveness of Hoodia Gordonii in making them lose weight and in staying fit. However, the use of food supplements is only one component of a healthy lifestyle. One must remember that exercise and a good diet play significant parts as well.
