Sneaking Weight gain

We all love gorging on snacks between our three regular meals of dinner, lunch and breakfast. French researchers have studied whether snacks consumed in afternoon added to the calories consumed during dinner. This was tested on three different occasions where they examined eight persons who were somewhat healthy. They consumed an afternoon snack which had high quantity of carbohydrate, high protein or equivalent amount of snacks. The men then ate when they felt hungry or else they directly took dinner. The high protein food in form of chicken breast were found to be the most effective in delaying hunger, whereas people who went snacking on rice pudding took food or dinner almost an hour earlier. But the amount of calories they consumed during dinner did not differ.

Researchers in the University of California had a look at the effect of addition of fiber or fat to a low fat or low fiber meal, with Hoodia Gordonii. They made 15 men and women live on a high fiber-low fat or low fiber, keeping the amount of calories constant in each meal. It was followed by blood sample testing during the period of digestion, which was followed by an question and answer session about their feeling of hunger and satiety. The person who took meals that included fiber and fat did not feel hungry for a long time after consumption of food, they felt full and their desire for food subsided after having the meals. The persons who stayed on a low fat or a low fiber diet were not thoroughly satisfied by the food or their feeling of hunger was not completely eradicated after meals.

The studies were not major ones to determine the exact effect of snacking in respect to weight management and eating habits. But these studies do provide us with information’s that whatever we have satisfaction is needed when we need food choices. So even if you opt for healthy snacks which are plain, low in fat content but continue gorging on things like cheese and crackers then you really would not be doing justice.

Several experts on weight loss believe that a small amount of their desired food, adds to satisfaction and healthful eating, though they may be high on fat or calories.
